Driving directions: To get to this cemetery from the center of Rockdale, take U.S. 79 west toward Thorndale and travel five and one half miles to CR 306l and turn to the right. Continue approximately one and one half miles and a sign will appear for the Garza Family Cemetery and the Hickory Grove cemetery. The burial ground is approximately one half mile behind the Garza home. Permission should be obtained from the family to enter their pasture.

I recently found this beautiful monument
after being made aware of it by Ms.
Charlotte Wilhelm. She and her husband
have ancestors interred. Unfortunately a
small tree had fallen on it and damaging
some of the shells. I have since, as shown,
removed the tree and repaired some of the
larger shells on the top. The photo's don't
do justice to this impressive, unusual
monument. The trunk is true petrified wood,
knots and all. I hope to obtain similar
shells so that the damaged ones on the
perimeter curbing may also be replaced.
G.A. Doss, 1842-1924. There is another
similar, petrified wood, Doss monument a
short distance away(Ed A. Doss, No legible
dates).
There are many toppled monuments, including
1865 tablets laying in the dirt, many
covered over. What a shame. This cemetery
could be resurrected with some community
and interred descendant's efforts.
