CEMETERY FLAG — VFW Post 6525, with an assist from American Legion Carlyle Post 358, rededicated a flagpole on the Fourth of July at Rockdale’s Old City Cemetery on Main Street south of the railroad tracks. The cemetery, which dates back to the 1870s and contains graves of Confederate soldiers, was recently the site of a massive cleanup by volunteers and city crews who moved trees and brush and re-set a number of tombstones.
PRAYER AND PATRIOTISM — There was plenty of both on the morning of July 4 as Rockdale area veterans, and others, gathered to rededicate the flagpole at the Old City Cemetery. VFW Post 6525 and its auxiliary officiated with American Legion Carlyle Post 358, and its auxiliary as guests. Top Right: (L-R) Ernest Garza, who was instrumental in restoring the flagpole, and Rev. James Brymer of Conoley Community Church, who delivered the invocation.

CEMETERY HELPERS — Girl Scout Troops 9603 (led by Sheree Smith) and 9605 (Led by Maria Santellano) have assisted in cleaning up Rockdale’s Old City Cemetery, maintaining its Jewish Cemetery on community work days and on a continuing basis as needed.
Jack Brooks, who organized the cleanup effort, noted: “The City of Rockdale, its residents, and historic preservation groups, commend the fine Girl Scout Central Texas Council and our local Girl Scout Troops.”
